fashion should be fun.

it should be easy, breezy, & a little nostalgic. slipping on a garment should conjure up emotions in you. yes... even a t-shirt should be doing this.

if you clothes aren't, donate them to charity & start again.

art is appropriation. theft of thoughts is common. they are the currency by which we steal our own validity. we home invade each others canvases, smashing to grab & make away with loot & booty & high definition flat screen televisions. figuratively speaking.

elizabeth marpole knows this.

this is why she knits herself balaclavas. out of paper. she has stolen.

this is why she knits balaclava suits.

her work is masterful. it's young & fresh. it smacks of potential. her ink drawings in particular are worth covetting, the way they capture the abject horror of your mask coming undone.

there term '1ne to watch' is bandied around far too often, but in marpole's case it is the truth. she has just graduated central tafe & been asked to study at curtain, fasttracked to do honours in just over a year. that's if she accepts.

a girl like this, with the world at her feet... anything is possible.

1ne thing is certain... her work excites mOther very very much.

at the recent celebrate the sun beyond blue fashion fundraiser, the evening's talk was invariably distracted time & time again by the new ring award winning designer alister yiap was sporting.

it was an audacious affair, all trajectories & statement. over the top? you bet. a little bit outrageous? uh-huh. totally impractical? in the best way possible. ingenious? yet again.

yiap consistently pulls accessorised rabbits out of his fashion hat. he stole the spotlight with his outlandish couture for the catwalk collections, laser cut perspex and metal wings accentuating cable tie dresses, the latter the advertising look for perth fashion festival's 2009 tilted couture, a celebration of queer & queer friendly designers, the festival's first ever parade specifically tailored as such.

his intimtate jewellery pieces are, at their heart, consistently in love with science. it's no surprises then his new range explores how the world of maths & numbers travels along vectors to collapse in on iteself. his ATOM ring... & these consequent ATOM pendants... are an extrapolation of how the world is engineered in virtual reality. if only we could shift things to fold as such, we'd be gods. but we aren't. instead we are in awe of their capabilities, yiap stealing the proverbial fire from heaven in this instance.

observe:
cast in sterling silver & accompanied by a 1.5mm ball chain that is 80cms in length, these babies range in price from $155 - $195. the ring? more, clearly, but worth it for the looks it'll get.

it's easy to see why yiap is so hot right now, his work consistently hitting a higher & higher mark each season.

we knew it was going to be good. we just didn't know how good.

we'd already fallen in love with arj selvam's golden ratio, his debut collection in 2009. he was a breath of fresh air. we loved it so much so we requested the most obscure piece of the range - two leather sleeves, designed to twist slightly. they never went into production. instead, arj sent us the samples, as a gift.

this is how an emerging designer gets your attention. not through gifts as such, but through the selfless breaking down of their body of work. it's the realisation that they are no greater than the next garment they make. some would have kept those sleeves. they were a key look after all. but not arj.

what happened next... or now rather... simply blew us away.

black stump is arj's second collection. it incorporates a sustained vision. it's a singular crystalline note, shimmering across the dawning outback. it is inspired. it is relevant. it is ambitious. but more than that, it is sincere & human.

plus it reinvents australiana - something our culture critically needs as we push forward as a global identity, our resources a covet of dust, our dollar a might plastic beast, growing exponentially. hell, in months to come we'll even give the world it's greatest anti-hero in the form of wikileaks founder julian assange.

but for now, let's talk fashion. ss/11 for arj is a two tone affair. black. or white. one colour symbolises the black burnt out stump of the bush, raped by fire, swallowed whole to throb as ember. the other colour represents the relentless ruin agriculture brings, capturing the snow driven tundra of the wheatland's salt lakes. there is no grey. instead there is kangaroo fur & dip dyed silks & waxed cowhides & angora & bamboo & 925 hand sewn buttons. there's that dress with the one sleeve, that beautiful midnight dipped daybreak sexy little dress that the try-hards will try to palm off as being rick owens-esque. & there are hats... beautiful hats. but at the centre of the collection is his drover jacket, from hereon in known as the jacket.

the driza-bone is a hideous legacy of our sheep steering heritage. it's ugly, reeks of hard work, & is largely unflattering. but to take such an icon & make it relevant? to make it sexy? to make it covetable? that's inspired.

& it is, as an engineered architectural feat of fabrication & form. yes, it uses traditional materials - australian oilskin. but it also clasps the shoulders with sureness, like a lover would just before leaning in to kiss. it sweeps the body's length, encapsulating it in a future where the outback is our home... not like in mad max, but because the ocean's in their infinite bad mood have swallowed all the soft edges of our country. as a nation we admit defeat and set about the hard task of hard yakka... but we insist in doing so dressed in the best threads.

in that future, as in this one now, arj selvam is on hand with a vision of how the bush can finally convey elegance.

but enough hyperbole. thanks to shirin carter from ragdoll photography & outinperth we have images of arj selvam's wa designer showcase #2 debut at the recent perth fashion festival. observe:

of course, this show was not nearly as breath taking as his official pff debut at avante-garde, an off-schedule unofficial opening collaborated into being by dilettante and zekka, head studio and arj selvam taking out the middle of the night's parade, all of it set in the round at uwa's winthrop hall. by utilising organ and some of the best international labels around, the show was akin to a spanish horse show, where the horses cantor & saddle up, bouncing around the arena like loose atoms aching for collision. & to lull it all, maria cain from head studio appeared, lacquering white a girl's hair while arj selvam's models marched boldly forward, flags aloft. it was mesmerising. the whole thing.

& it's a goose bump of excitement that arj has sustained. 'man of the moment' was one phrase the fashion editor of the west australian, pip christmass, used, & with just cause too: arj is about to show his next collection at paris before obiliterating rafw in 2011 with part 2wo of black stump... or so we understand.

as for the jacket, we know that even though it retails at around $1800, that 1ne day it'll be ours, that 1ne day it spoon across our shoulders & coo us to go bush. & we will... for an afternoon at least.

1ne to watch? well, no... because if you aren't watching him already, you clearly don't know what's happening at fashion at current. which is ok... you are reading this after all, so there's no need to be black stumped anymore on what to wear.

zoe trotman is fierce. so is her fashion.

her label, lonely 8-bit heroes, is a much welcomed affront to the sober lines of architectural coolness that inhabit fashion. hers is a label which literally explodes with colour. she invents. she explores. she pours her passion and gut into every garment she makes.

her printed leggings are her trademark. why, even mOther owns a pair of her black baby chew toy leggings, although standout pair are a bright yellow covered in icy poles. elsewhere, donuts and sprinkles and cherry pie feature, her blue dolmain truckstop dress heaven with a side order of delight. even the shoes are zoe trotman one-offs. sigh... is there nothing this girl can't make-&-do?

at the recent perth fashion festival, she tore down the roof with her eccentric flair. that and she was singlehandedly the most photographed girl at the whole event.

thanks to shirin carter at ragdoll photography and outinperth, we can show you just how fantastic lonely 8-bit heroes was when it made its debut in the much covetted wa designer collection #2, the spot where the best emerging talents are showcased. collection title? joy fantastic. observe:

absence contains a potent presence.

in death, our energy unruffles to pollen back across the juxt of the universe, leaving behind a supposed site where every memory every person who ever knew us ever has, had or will have shimmers to intersect & permutate. we become a prismatic echo, a ricochet which bounces through the tense narrative, or rather the tense of narrative.

if only we could settle for 1ne moment, we could communicate through the muffled sheet all dead things become covered with. if we were instruments, our sound might linger. but instead we are noisy beasts. yes, we are those things that are largely incapable of operating the articulation machine while breathing, let alone when gleaming.

enter ghostdrums, an experimental one-man side-project situated in perth who (dis)embodies the essential ingredient inherent in all international ambient electronica. this outfit & its debut ep exists in the absence of a grand pop machine dream, in the absence of aria-isms, the absence of charts toppling, the absence of the industry music has pitted itself against in order to accumulate stocks & shares & such other insignificance.

ghostdrums captures the prismatic rhythm of absence, of death, with a percussive precision. & he does so without melancholia or gloom or ectoplasm. you see, ghostdrums is a band - or rather a moment in experimental ambience - who is part perfection. irony, & disturbed daydream who is collapsing in on itself. what adds to the charm is that all the while, ghostdrums appropriates the modern death of mankind - in 1ne instance as that taunting hollow modem scream we've become so dependent on in the last decade (even if now that cry is wireless & disconnected & has no breath) - as a dying refrain amid the noise.

with sass, an ear for composition & a swag of lo-fi samples, ghostdrums brings the experiment home, presenting perth with a concise canvas, 1ne calibrated on the clicks & whirrs of modern music. so often dull or soulless, ghostdrums supersedes expectancy without labouring the pretension or stance such artists are capable of doing, almost as if it's their right to do so since they alone are making such sounds. & still, ghostdrums is reckless at all the right moments, creating a juxt, 1ne that tetters.

it's time to nearly rise up once more as issue #4our of MoTHER [has words...] slides into production. yes, submissions are in & we are currently sifting through them & getting excited at what we find once we open up an attachment or two. & it's a broad mixed bag with a few more eastern state & international submissions than in the past, which is great & incredibly encouraging... especially with such a mega mix of a break under our belt.

so where have we been? well, the editor has been busy editting another zine called "COTTONMOUTH", which is the zine component of a narrative art adventure also called Cottonmouth, just without the caps locked. the zine is monthly too (it compliments the performances) hence the break - it's taken up a bit of time but finally has feet... & legs... & is even spawning an anthology, due out june slash july of this year.

that & our editor has also gotten a day job - yes, a 9ine to 5iver at OUTinPerth, a local lesbian and gay community newspaper for which he writes fashion, arts, music & some film interviews. so as you can imagine, such a foreign experience fills up his time. but he's back with mOther, making sure that in 2009ine it's bigger & brighter & shinier.

to help him out is an assistant editor plus a graphic designer. but more on them when the next issue comes out. which is soon... very soon.

in the meantime we can tell you that it'll feature:

andrew nicholls as the featured visual artist
& the antipoet as the featured poet

plus a host of other exciting talents... so stay tuned.

dear children of the sleeping sun,

it's official - the new issue of MoTHER [has words...] has been unleashed on a whole new year of potential & possibility. which is exactly what issue 3hree is all about - the varying & variance of being a human, the depth & scoop involved in looking at the condition of living as a 'science'.

if you think about humanity & science together, well...essentially there is no scientific formula to life, to living, to being, to creating, to waking up or going to sleep or falling in love or passing on or passing out or passing the buck. to be human is to live in a vortex of chance & instance. we can't equate who will be what & how...we can only observe &, when it comes to the self, empower with direction, either negative or postive. to be a human means that you simply are, that you simply be...that you live your life simply. to add complexity to this already complex universe is to just make the equation harder for your self & for all those around you.

thus, what mOther has learnt from this issue is that humanity is a life best lived with honesty, integrity, passion, certainty & a dash of decent diligence, just to drive the ego down & the heart onwards. yes, for all those who indulge in the delicate destruction of the soul it will sound like awfully hard work...such pleasant nice concepts...such eupherisms...such simple thoughts...but there's the rub sucker - why make it hard for yourself when it's so much easier to achieve more from making life a simple thing to live.

it's time to launch issue #2wo & my word, the hype surrounding this 1ne. first off, mOther plugged the whole she-bang as part of the PRIDE WA GAY & LESBIAN FESTIVAL so that everyone in that sub-cult can come along. then she decided to make 1ne of perth's hottest new bands the featured sound &, well...now everyone wants to come along. so, what's the lowdown on issue #2wo, ...the future of the feminine...? why not read on for yourself little 1ne:

this time round we have tess mcnamara as the featured artist. this girl is amazing...as is her art. she crosses boundaries – not only those of technique & style, but acceptability & political correctness. she doesn’t know when to stop…& nor should she, like any good artist. whether she’s rocking it out in a band [rainbow haiku in silkie krusher & the sex], making d’jour frond folded couture [munting daughter], being a drag king [trevor woo] or wildly snapping shots for the next installment of her ‘zine [one night stand]…yes, it’s true – this party girl doesn’t ever want to stop. put simply, tess mc rocks!!! that’s why mOther loves her!
gabrielle everall is the featured poet for this issue. her debut verse novel, dona juanita - and the love of boys, is being launched tuesday october 16th 2007 @ the brass monkey's the glass house, william street northbridge from 6pm. mOther caught up with gabby to chat about hyena meat & all things brilliant, which is what this debut collection is. yes, even john kinsella says so. get a snapshot into the mind of 1ne of our countries new poetic mistresses. she's sure to drench you with her desire.
mandy is a girl who draws on walls. her work is amazing too. she draws with emotion, with power...her line is evocative & her characters mutate from the friendly into the surreal. melancholy mandy, her main character, has no smile yet is familiar to everyone like a sad, post industrial holly hobby. mOther caught up with mandy inbetween drinks to find out what makes this girl tick...& where she likes to stick her doodles.
now for the featured sound...brash & sassy. these girls come with a fanfare unlike any other. everyone who is anyone has heard of them, & they hype surrounding their burgeoning career is astounding. they haven't yet even released a cd & nobody can stop talking about them. big? like their shoulder pads, hell yeah. these girls are gigantic...& naturally, they're playing the launch party.

the debut issue of MoTHER [has words...] is in production, & to accentuate the oddball originality of this opus, MoTHER [is mad...]. has decreed the first issue's theme to be ...something queer this way cums..., which means it features lesbots, gaybeaus & trans-ams in all their technicolour talent. straight? then queer up your thoughts, push your buttons, your boundaries & experiment a little more with yourself...like you should be doing anyway. it's one of the integral laws of maintaining humanity: experimenting with how you perceive the world, & understanding it better by daring yourself.

now, in keeping with what will be the format of all future issues, MoTHER [has words...] will feature:

1ne street artist...which includes original images, mudmaps to their work, & their best recipe or 'how to make...' instruction sheet.
1ne artist...featuring mOther's words on why they're hot & an assortment of images from the artist themself.
1ne poet...who will feature in a ficto-picto fashion shoot...they will also go head-to-head with mOther, show off their pretty words, & have a crossword created just for them
& now MoTHER [has words...] is also proud to feature 1ne sound or band per issue...who will supply lyrics to their sing-a-longs, answer mOther's probing questions, & also play at the launch party for whichever issue it is they feature in.

all of this talent will be specifically chosen from the gene-pool the theme suggests [although blatant boundary vandals get more love & respect from MoTHER [encourages it...] at least]. therefore, in the debut edition, ...something queer this way cums..., you will find the featured work of:

bambi, rampant lesbian street artist who chats about what the boys are up to in brazil while supplying bambi's brilliant recipe for making stuff stick to things, her very own patented paste-up paste. a bambi mud-map of her hot bits will be included in the print version.
eric james mitchell, mad genius of mt lawley & the pioneer of h.i. art (home invasion art), an abrasive form of precariously balanced sculpture which uses a residents most treasured, delicate belongings as its content - unharmed, just in danger of toppling. he is also an artist who, in a growing trend toward art on the run & micro materialism, uses blu-tac as the basis of bringing his work bindingly together as a terrifying tapestry of torn apart decor.
michael farrell is a melbourne language poet whose latest collection break me ouch (3d deep publishing) ventures into a pencil thin frontier. but that's not the purpose of farrell's presence here...oh lordy lou no. every issue of MoTHER [has words...] features a ficto-picto-poetic-fashion editorial, where photography, poetry, couture & the poet as model all combine into one explosive mix of experimental jetset trash. see farrell sleuth it out sherlock style in local threads from material boy while scott-patrick mitchell snaps the shots. later, see him flee from an the attack of the giant pigeon. egads, the horror.

& now sink the band, featuring matthew sforcina & co as they get ready to unleash their super moody version of post pop progressive folk rock, a literary high for the new sage guy. dense, melodramatic & super quirky, sink are a band who think, who aren't afraid to use big words, who say 'fuck you' to mainstream & draw their passion from the mad romp of classical composition. they are intelligent, savvy, soulful & elegantly atonal. issue 1ne & they're going head-to-head with mOther, write her a new tune & supply lyrics for it as well.

contributions for issue 1ne are now closed. issue 2wo however...send your work on. the featured vandal, artist & sound spots are filled for issue 2wo, & mOther is still deciding who will be featured literati. she may make them duel to the death. what fun. but all others may contribute to issue 2wo now!

imagine a girl so beautiful she has to question herself, naturally, in order for the cosmos to balance. her jaw is square, her shoulders broad, her tone sardonic, her heart curious. give her peroxide hair. make her inquisitive. hands made of granite. ambition boundless like an arsonists fire. now, pair her off with a boy as equally odd & you have emma sulley, 1ne half of an equation bearing algorhythms of love. antipodean her & her boy-half & watch them yearn to learn the last secrets they can divulge together. he teaches her to strut, she teaches him to shoot a camera, now watch her write, him meditate with one hand clapping in the wind like a butterfly or something.

emma sulley is that girl. she is magic incarnate. here, an excerpt of her dissertation of love vs hate in the worlds greatest battle of fiction & staying up late.

...BAMBI's brILLiANT reciPIE fOR sTICKING THINgs to sTUFF

...or...

THE POO POO OF PASTE-UP GLUE by BAMBI THE STREET ARTIST

needs:

1 cup of flour
1 cup of cold water
3 litres of boiling water
1/2 a litre of PVA glue
1 cup of sugar
a whisk
a sealable container

wants:

human kindness
endless love
peanut butter

instructions:

discard all that you want...it won't come during the course of this cooking sesssion.
add the flour & cold water together using the whisk...naturally.
add to 3hree litres of water, boiling.
use that whisk again, not as a microphone to bop along to your fave song with, but rather to briskly whiskly bring together your boiling pot of love. lavish this attention for 5ive minutes or such.
then, add half a litre of PVA glue along with a cup of sugar. this be Bambi's secret step, to make the adhesive adhere even harder.
pop into your sealable container & run off under the cover of night to vandalise like all good children should. ooooh, & the best part...this glue keeps for up to 3hree months.

run along now children...destroy the world for MoTHER [sniffs glue...]. & watch you don't get caught by high beams or headlamps. nasty things they be....

h.i. art (noun) refers to a new field of sculpture where the gallery space is made to look as though a home invasion has taken place, hence the acronym h.i. (home invasion). sculptures incorporate household objects which are precariously balanced atop each other to create an effect of bedlam & mayhem. the term is a play on the old school concept of 'high art', & is art usually executed when one is high.

eric james mitchell is an artist who has his household goods in storage in perth, western australia, but is currently on tour through the ghettos of sydney & byron bay. watch out for his mini sculptures, being adhered to a wall near you.

below be a poem by debut issue featureling michael farrell. his first collection of poetry, ode ode, was printed by salt publishing in 2003. his second poetic publishing picnic, break me ouch, became available from 3D publishing as of 2006 & was described by prolific poster pin-up poet john kinsella as perhaps one of the most innovative works of poetry created in the new millennium thus far. why? because it's so graphic.

that's not to say it's lewd or suggestive, but rather hand drawn. yes, cartoon poetry. die die die lieung, bring on the faceless cowled keyhole caricature of farrell's cold analytical heart. reflections of ode ode tune in from time to time as farrell continues his trademark sample snatching of song lines, here sampling them to greater effect, the box-like window world he's created like a small speaker, amplifying with greater skill & accuracy the meaning & intent of his white hot lines.
